The Evacuee Collection

By 1941 rationing for clothing was a very real part of life and children’s clothing had to be practical and hard wearing – this meant the same garment needed to be suitable for everyday and special occasions. In a slight departure from the other collections we feature two uniforms – that would have been worn by adults – to show how important the different roles at home were to the war effort.

Munitions Worker

The boiler suit, so favoured by Winston Churchill became standard uniform in the munitions factories – work that was largely done by women during WWII. This overall could of course be worn by either boys or girls. Style with a headscarf tied around the head for a period feel for girls or a flat cap for boys.
